Primitivo is grown in Puglia, the “heel” of Italy and it is estimated to be the country’s 12th most widely planted grape variety. It was introduced to Italy in the 18th century from Croatia and brought to California in 1968 by UC Davis Professor Austin Goheen. The climate of Fair Play yields a Primitivo deeply colored with rich character, concentrated flavors of zesty cherry, wild blackberry, raspberry and spice, notes that are common in the early-ripening Primitivo.
Primitivo is often praised for its ability to reflect both its terroir and its winemaker’s style and skill. The 2013 Charles B. Mitchell Reserve Primitivo represents the AVA with deep colors and robust bramble flavors, and a great mouth feel (texture).
This 2013 Charles B. Mitchell Reserve Primitivo will be best enjoyed after bottle aging for at least 6 months and continued aging for an additional five years.
