Zinfandel is a variety of red grape planted in over 10 percent of California vineyards and hails from the Dalmatian coast of Croatia. The California gold Rush in the 1850s brought the first Zinfandel vines to the Sierra Foothills.
The 2013 Charles B. Mitchell Reserve Zinfandel fruit was grown Southwest corner of the Mount Akum area in a sandy loam soil. Spanish Creek Vineyard is a vineyard consistently harvested mid-season in the Fair Play AVA, allowing some good hang time. By enjoying a long growing season, the grapes are allowed to develop more intense flavor, color and complexity, characteristics of great wines.
